HBNU’s 39th Student Council FROM

By Kim Do-eun Reporter, Senior of Public Policy

Do you know which institution represents individual students in university? It is the student council. Then, do you know about the student council at HBNU that is striving to ensure the rights and welfare of students? This article includes the information of HBNU’s 39th student council FROM, which aims to represent the voices of students and lead the change of the university.

They have the slogan “Changes in the school starting from us.” Their ultimate goal is to lead the change of the university based on students’ opinions by becoming a student council that can quickly recognize and respond accurately to school problems and students’ difficulties with specific plans.

They have organized eight executive departments, excluding senior management, to implement policies in various fields smoothly.

l  Executive Department

The Finance department is responsible for administrative and accounting in FROM’s overall business. They must put trust first, and that trust comes from the minutes recorded in the budgeting process and honest budget execution. They are trying to become an institution that students can trust.

The Education Policy department was organized to prevent students from infringing on their right to education and to provide a better educational environment. They plan to establish a system for increasing the number of required subjects, a credit carryover system, and a detailed grade disclosure system. They also want to create a better educational environment by constantly monitoring problems with the university’s academic system.

The Business Planning department plans events and projects organized by FROM for students to participate in and enjoy. They try to plan various school events that students can be satisfied with, such as Daedongje, sports day, and the Long March through National Land.

The Student Communication department is in charge of all communication channels of FROM. There is no reason for a student council to exist where students’ voices cannot be reached. Through this department, FROM wants to become a student council that moves to the voices of students in line with their slogan, “Changes in the school starting from us.”

The Employment Support department was organized to strengthen students’ employment capabilities through internal and external employment programs and welfare. They help students’ careers through programs and welfare that are practically helpful, not inefficient.

The Public Relations department makes everything that students see and hear. They produce promotional materials for the projects that FROM is conducting various with useful information. As a department in charge of visualizing projects organized by FROM, they try to deliver information more easily and accurately so that students can understand the contents.

The External Cooperation department leads cooperation with FROM and external institutions for the rights and interests of students. They strive to improve the convenience of students through partnerships and links with external institutions in various fields, such as employment, culture, and welfare.

The Facility Management department was organized to relieve students’ inconvenience about the school facilities. From classrooms to commercial districts, if students feel uncomfortable using the facilities, they try to improve it in a reasonable way.

The Culture and Sports department is in charge of the overall progress of students’ daily sports and sports-related policies of FROM. They promise students a better school life with various welfare and cultures such as opening the gym, extending the hours of use of fitness centers, and sports day.

The following is about several school events organized by FROM. The first is ‘Daedongje,’ a festival at HBNU. The 2023 Daedongje ‘Maybe From’ was held from May 24 to 26 at the school’s Grand Stadium and Hyeyum Square. As major events, booths for each department and various event booths were operated during the day, and entertainers performed at night.

The second is a Sports Day. The 2023 Sports Day will be held in October after the midterm exam for the second semester. Students form teams between departments to play various games such as soccer, basketball, foot volleyball, dodgeball, foot baseball, three-legged race, relay, group jump rope, tug-of-war, and large ball rolling. This is a great opportunity for students to develop a sense of community and promote exchanges between students and departments. In addition to the game, you can enjoy various events such as booths for each department, event booths for the student council, and food trucks.

The last one is the Long March through National Land. During the summer vacation every year, the Long March through National Land is held under the supervision of the Student Council. This allows students who feel concerns about their careers and studies during college life to feel the vitality of school life, the beauty of our country and strengthen their willingness to challenge themselves toward new goals. Since FROM has pledged to go to Jeju Island for the Long March through National Land, it will be even more special in 2023.

The following is an interview with Lee Jin-woo, the 39th president of the From Student Council.

Lee Jin-woo, Senior of Industrial Engineering, president of the 39th From Student Council at HBNU

Q. What motivated you to name your student council ‘FROM,’ and what does it mean?

I would like to reply to this with the slogan of FROM. The slogan of FROM is “Changes in the school starting from us.” I wanted to emphasize “from us” with the ideology that the owner of the school is a student. This does not mean much, but it contains my ideology.

Q. What made you start this job?

Last year, I served as student president of the Department of Industrial Engineering, and worked really hard for students in our department. After last year’s media coverage of the integration of our school with another school, HBNU students, as well as students from our department, have had to endure a lot of confusion and distorted gaze, both online and offline. At that time, I vowed to run for the school’s president for the first time because I could only do a limited job as a student president of the department.

Q. When is the most rewarding moment for you to do this?

I feel most rewarding when I improve the school’s system or fix facilities to improve the convenience and welfare of my school students, and when I hold various events for students’ memories.

Q. What is your work and the process of it?

Students may think that the task of the student council is only to plan and proceed with various events in the school, such as freshman orientation, Daedongje, Sports Day, and the Long March through National Land. Of course, it is true that planning and conducting events is an important task. However, the main task of the student council is to attend numerous committee meetings for the development of the school and efforts to promote the welfare of students. I must, of course, study a lot in advance to attend many committees and have meetings. I have studied hard and I am still doing a lot.

Q. Is there any project that FROM is planning, that you would like to introduce in detail or have a distinct feature?

The main business we are currently focusing on is Daedongje. As it is the event with the greatest expectations of students, we are doing our best to prepare, so please look forward to it.

Q. Lastly, what do you want to say to the students?

It has already been nearly four months since the term of FROM began. I want to meet the needs of all the students, but I am still not good enough for that. FROM will always work hard for the students for the rest of our term. In the distant future, we will do our best to be remembered as a student council that has made many attempts and efforts for students when they think of FROM.

As such, FROM is working hard today as well to promote students’ rights and welfare. The rights and conveniences we enjoy are not naturally given. We can enjoy these because someone has been struggling to do this out of sight. The basis for becoming a school in which students are the subject must be the attention and demand of students. In other words, our attention is the most important thing for FROM to represent students’ voices. I hope that students at HBNU, who read this article, will be able to have an interest and supportive mind for FROM.
