- Expected to become a cornerstone for the commercialization of next generation quantum battery technology
□ Hanbat National University (President Oh Yong-jun) Professor Lee Sang-geum's research team in the Department of Computer Engineering discussed international joint research cooperation measures to develop key technologies for ultrafast charging quantum batteries with domestic and international research institutes such as the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) and the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) of Australia, and formalized the foundation for Korea-Australia industry-university-research cooperation by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) and Letter of Intent (LOI).
○ This cooperation meeting, held on the 29th in the International Conference Room at ETRI headquarters under the theme of 'CSIRO-ETRI Joint Research Meeting on Quantum Battery Technology', addressed joint research agendas and cooperation frameworks to link with the Phase 3 main research of the Industrial Technology Alchemist Project.
○ At this meeting, Australian representatives from the Australian Embassy in Korea, Quantum Australia, and CSIRO, along with researchers from ETRI, Korea Photonics Technology Institute, Hanbat National University, and Gachon University, attended to discuss application fields of quantum battery technology, commercialization feasibility, joint research goals, and division of roles.
○ In particular, Dr. James Q. Quach of CSIRO, a researcher leading the CSIRO Quantum Battery Team who previously led the development of the world's first quantum battery prototype, added special significance to this collaboration.
□ Officials from participating organizations derived phased joint research themes centering on ultrafast charging, long life energy storage, energy extraction, and optical interface platforms for quantum batteries.
○ Major areas of cooperation include ▲ development of quantum battery charging dynamics and control technology ▲ research on long life quantum energy storage materials and mechanisms ▲ research on quantum energy extraction and optical interface platforms.
○ In addition, plans to link CSIRO's quantum battery cell and experimental platform capabilities with ETRI led researchers' charging dynamics modeling, Physics AI powered charging condition optimization, and energy transfer interface technology were also discussed.
□ The Hanbat National University research team shared research cooperation possibilities in quantum battery charging protocols, energy management, and predictive platforms by utilizing artificial intelligence powered optimization and reinforcement learning technology.
○ The artificial intelligence powered charging optimization and prediction platform research proposed by the research team aligns with the direction of key quantum battery technology development under the ongoing Industrial Technology Alchemist Project.
○ This project aims to develop challenging and innovative core source technologies that can change the landscape of future industries; currently conducting Phase 2 tasks in 2026, upon selection for the Phase 3 main research, it will pursue securing quantum battery prototypes and demonstration technologies for up to 5 years starting in 2027.
○ In this meeting, along with the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding and Letter of Intent, measures to strengthen the international cooperation foundation for promoting Phase 3 main research—such as joint papers, international patents, and technology roadmap establishment—were also reviewed.
○ This is expected to serve as an opportunity to connect Hanbat National University's artificial intelligence powered energy optimization research capabilities with the global quantum energy research network.
□ Professor Lee Sang-geum said, "Quantum batteries are next generation energy storage technology capable of overcoming the limits of conventional lithium ion batteries, and their feasibility for practical use can be enhanced when combined with artificial intelligence powered control and optimization technology." He added, "Based on Hanbat National University's AI research capabilities, we will cooperate closely with domestic and international research institutes such as ETRI and CSIRO.“
□ Meanwhile, Hanbat National University is expanding convergence research in the fields of energy, artificial intelligence, and manufacturing and industrial applications, making efforts to create practical research achievements to lead future industries and strengthen global industry university research cooperation.
