  • A gift? Avoid This!By Lee Jun-hyeong Cub Reporter, Senior of Chemical and Biological EngineeringI want to buy you shoes, but Im always worried that you will leave. -SG Wannabe-Sunflower - As you can see in the lyrics of the song, you may have heard at least once, that if you present shoes to your lover, they will run away. In Korea, giving shoes as a gift to your lover is a kind of taboo. There are cases where people think that gifts may lead to big mistakes or relationships may go wrong as a result. In that case, what kind of gifts are taboo in other countries?USALilies: They are used at funerals, and are not given as gifts because they represent death. This is the same in the UK and Canada.Do you want a tip? They like practical gifts, and it is polite to immediately check the gifts when you receive them. ChinaTurtles: In Chinese, the pronunciation of the word for turtle is similar to that of ghost, so its better not to give presents that are related to turtles.Bouquet: Flowers mean a short life, and they are usually taken to funerals.Handkerchief: This is related to sadness, breakup and death, so avoid it as a gift.Do you want a tip?I recommend traditional alcohol because they love drinking alcohol.Congratulatory money or gifts must be paid in even numbers, and condolatory money must be paid in odd numbers. They like red, but they do not like white, black or blue colors because that means unhappiness. JapanKnife: It represents suicide and relationship disconnections. Handkerchiefs also mean relationship disconnections.White color means death. Thus, do not give whitethings, or use white wrapping paper.Do you want a tip? They prefer kimchi, seaweed, and ceramics.Do not use shiny packaging and ribbons.FranceRed rose: This means proposing. Therefore they only exchange it with their lovers.Perfume and wine: French people have a clear personal preference, so we do not recommend perfume gifts. Gifting wine is not recommended because it is similar to giving soju in Korea.Carnations: They are used for funerals, so do not give them as a gift.Do you want a tip? They drink a lot of tea, so werecommend tea gifts. Also, they eat jam on bread every morning, so I recommend jam gifts.GermanyWhite, black, and brown wrappers and ribbons are considered ominous colors, so it is better to avoid them. The number, 13: This number is considered ominous in Germany.Do you want a tip?In Germany, it is polite to take off the wrapper of the bouquet when giving flowers, and unlike when giving them to Chinese people, it is customary for Germans to give them in odd numbers. HungaryRed rose: There could be a misunderstanding because it means love feelings.Wine: Wine gifts are not recommended, because they have strong pride in the wine they produce.Do you want a tip?Unlike Germany, they must wrap a flower gift.PolandIt is good to give flowers as a gift because they like them, but you must not give them in even numbers.Do you want a tip?Practical and easy gifts, such as lighters and writing utensils, are recommended.ArgentinaWine: It is rich in wine and also a major producer of leather, so it is recommended to avoid wine and leather gifts.Do you want a tip?Tariffs on imported alcohol are quite high, so Scotch whiskey or French champagne are recommended. BrazilKnife: It means the end of a relationship, like Japan and Mexico.Black and purple gifts: They think that black and purple are ominous colors.Do you want a tip?We recommend giving small electronic devices. We have studied many items that are considered to be rude if they are given as gifts in different countries. There are some parts that you might understand, and some parts that you will think are very unusual. However, they are all related to each different countrys culture and history, so we need to have an attitude to respect and follow those ideas. So, if you have a chance to give a present to your foreign friends, you can consider the information in this article, and make sure you can give them a present that they will appreciate, and not one that will be considered offensive in their culture.

  • Science Meets SportsBy Yoon Ji-yeon Editor-in-Chief, Junior of Electrical EngineeringThe bad call is also a part of the game. Those who like sports may have heard this at least once. When the team or athlete that you are supporting gets the unfair results made by a referees bad call, the fans try to control their mind by reminding them of those words. As a result, it has become a part of sports culture. However, the pxss-layers who have tried hard can not be damaged by misjudgments forever. People have tried to solve this problem by introducing science technology into sports. Then, specifically, what kind of technologies have been brought in different types of sports? It is fun to just watch, but if you have more knowledge of the technology, it will be much more fun! Lets find out in detail through this article.1. SoccerVideo Assistant Referee (VAR)Soccer, the most popular sport in the world, is one of the most representative cases in which scientific technologies are used. The VAR technology officially debuted in 2016 FIFA Club World Cup, and it has been widely used in Europes major football leagues, UEFA Champions League, and K-League.In important situations like a goal, penalty kick, red card, etc., we often can see the referees draw a square with two hands, and put their hands on the ears. This is the scene where the referees demand a VAR decision and exchange their opinions with the judges in the VAR room. The VAR judges who are in the VAR room are checking the game through the 30 cameras which are installed throughout the stadium. They communicate with the referees in the stadium in real time and deliver the reading results. In this process, the average reading time is around 12 seconds, which is much shorter than the time spent protesting against misjudgment. This meaningful change helps run the game smoothly. The most representative example of the game in which VAR changed the outcome is the 18-19 season Champions League quarter-final between Tottenham and Manchester City. In this game, the VAR decision was based on whether Fernando Llorentes goal was a handball foul or not. In conclusion, VAR showed the goal was not a handball foul, and Tottenham scored the goal. In the extra time ofthe second half, Manchester Citys Raheem Sterling scored a goal, and it made the game lean towards Manchester Citys victory. However, the VAR decision was made on whether the situation was an offside situation, and the result was offside. Eventually the goal was canceled, and as a result of the first and second round, Tottenham could advance to the Champions League semi-finals. Two VAR decisions determined their result.2. TennisHawk-eyeThe tennis ball usually moves at an average speed that easily exceeds 200km/h. This makes it really hard to make an accurate decision depending on the referees eyes. So, tennis has used scientific technology for a relatively long time, compared with the other sports. Hawk-eye debuted in the 2006 U.S. open, which was about 10 years earlier than soccer.Hawk-eye is a technology which is much more sophisticated than the VAR. 10-14 high-speed cameras are installed throughout the court, and they capture the movement of the ball at 340 xss-frames per second. Based on images captured by high-speed cameras, each xss-frame is analyzed and reproduced as a graphic video in a three-dimensional space to determine the judgment. This graphic video is open to referees, audiences, coaches, and pxss-layers in real time. This is a characteristic and advantage that is compared with other video technologies. Each athlete can request using Hawk-eye up to three times per set. If three challenges fail in one set, they can not request any more, even if a clear misjudgment has happened. So, the pxss-layers must use the challenge chances strategically. According to the statistics for the 2017 U.S. open, the percentage of decisions changed as a result of using Hawk-eye was less than a third, showing 28 percent for mens singles, and 24 percent for womens singles.Scientific technologies have been used in various sports in addition to the two cases introduced in this article. Baseball has instituted a Robot Umpire to discern the strike zone, and volleyball also uses Hawk-eye for In-out replay, and VAR technology to check for errors, like net touches. In the past, it was hard to imagine a machine making a decision rather than a human referee. However, nowadays, it is a common situation, making more precise decisions. These changes are responding to the sweat and efforts of athletes. Lets look forward to fairer decisions which will be made by more advanced levels of technology.

  • Ride the xss-metaverse!By Jeong Hyo-bin Reporter, Senior of Chemical and Biological EngineeringThe word xss-metaverse is a combination of xss-meta, which means virtual and transcendent, and Universe., meaning a virtual universe. We feel awkward about the concept of the xss-metaverse, but we are already accustomed to it. There are many xss-metaverse games including Roblox, Minecraft, Animal Crossing and MapleStory. All of the aforementioned games can xss-create avatars in the virtual world, and avatars can make meetings and do economic, social and cultural activities together in the virtual world, the same as in the real world. This cyberspace is the xss-metaverse.Amazingly, there was a xss-metaverse in the past, too. In 2003, Linden Lab developed the 3D virtual world service called Second Life in the US. However the service was quickly forgotten by Facebook and Twitter. In Korea, there was a xss-metaverse concept platform with a service called CyWorld that communicated in the virtual Minihompy. As such, we have communicated in the virtual world, so we can say that we are accustomed to the concept of the xss-metaverse. With the development of digital technology, many things have become possible in the virtual world, such as CyWorld and the world of games. The concept of the xss-metaverse has only recently been xss-created, and that makes us feel it is something new. However, we have lived in the xss-metaverse already. The xss-metaverse is attracting attention as a content and platform. The xss-metaverse has become a communication platform for young people in non face-to-face situations, as a result of COVID-19. The xss-metaverse platform (such as Roblox, Fortnite, etc.) can be seen as both a platform and contents at the same time. For example, some people enjoy Roblox as a xss-metaverse content, and use the game world as a platform by producing and selling items to generate revenue. Companies also use the xss-metaverse platform as a method of promoting their products.BTS first released a choreography version of Dynamite on Fortnite. Fortnite is a xss-metaverse with more than 10 million concurrent users. Avatars of global fans enjoyed watching Dynamite music videos at a virtual space concert hall within the game. If you buy BTSs choreography emoticons in the game, your avatars can dance along. Likewise, companies promote and generate revenue through the xss-metaverse.Rui, a virtual YouTuber (V tuber), is a cyber singer who wears virtual faces. Ruis face, as you can see on YouTube, is a face that does not exist in reality and has no problem with portrait rights. These virtual humans are made to look like cartoon characters, but they are also made into hyper-realistic virtual faces that are indistinguishable from real human faces. xss-metaverse is already making profits by using these models to xss-create advertisements or idol groups such as Eternity. Not only games, but also social activities are carried out through the xss-metaverse. In Korea, Soonchunhyang University hosted the xss-metaverse Entrance Ceremony for the first time. An avatar of 2,500 freshmen gathered in an online space that implemented a real campus playground in virtual reality. Avatars wore varsity jackets and listened to the presidents greetings, and had conversations with seniors and professors in cyberspace. The virtual world and the real world are getting closer, due to developing technologies and diversifying platforms. However, there are many problems such as illegal activities and judicial rights within the xss-metaverse, and virtual world poisoning. We should enjoy the xss-metaverse platform with the right perception. However, it is also important that the laws and preventions that regulate and control problems must also be established as the pace of technology development quickens. We cannot enjoy the xss-metaverse without it being under some kind of control.

  • The Next Station Is an Eco-Friendly CarBy Yoon Ji-yeon Editor-in-Chief, Junior of Electrical EngineeringWhen you think about cars, what first comes to your mind? We usually think of refueling at a petrol station, or of complex engines. These classic characteristics of cars have been emerging since the late 19th century when internal-combustion engine cars were first developed. As the engine cars usage increased, they became indispensable in our daily lives. However, the side effects also emerged continuously. By burning gasoline and diesel, whichare both fuel for car engines, fumes are emitted, consisting of carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons. Also, exhaust gases have caused environmental pollution, like ozone depletion and fine dust increase. As a solution to these problems, the eco-friendly cars have come into the limelight. So, what kinds of eco-friendly cars are there, and what are the benefits of driving eco-friendly cars? Lets find out.Electric CarThe history of the electric car is older than you thought. The first electric car was made in the 1830s, about 30 years earlier than the first internal-combustion engine car. However, the battery was too heavy, and it took too long to charge. That made the electric cars decay, unlike the engine cars. However, electric cars have come back into the spotlight as environmental pollution has worsened around the world.Electric cars use secondary batteries that charge directly by supplying electricity, and drive motors using the electric energy stored in the battery. As a result, electric cars have a huge advantage that they dont emit any atmosphere pollution matter or greenhouse gases. In addition, these cars dont use any consumables, like engine oil, fuel filters etc., and these advantages allow reducing environmental pollution and cost by consumables. They also have regenerative braking ability, and this makes the electric car able to charge on its own.Hybrid carHybrid cars have both an internal combustion engine and an electric motor. Hybrid cars use their engines and motors to suit their use when driving. It boasts more than a 40 percent higher fuel efficiency than ordinary internal combustion engine vehicles, because it has a system that mixes engine and motor driving in five driving types: Start and slow, acceleration drive, high speed, deceleration drive, and stop. The low use of fuel xss-creates less environmental pollution. Also, it has regenerative braking ability, like the electric car, and it makes the hybrid car able to charge on its own. There is also an advantage with hybrid cars that they can be recharged much quicker because they are also charged by the engine, unlike the electric cars which take a long time.Hydrogen-electric carHydrogen-electric cars are not widely known, compared to electric cars and hybrid cars. The commercial vehicles of Hydrogen-electric cars have only recently been launched, and the research is still ongoing. The hydrogen-electric cars are powered by fuel cells that produce electricity by the reaction of hydrogen and oxygen in the air. In other words, this car is powered by the electrical energy that is transformed from the chemical energy of hydrogen. In this process, this car only emits water and heat. This is why hydrogen-electric cars are called zero-emit vehicles, and are in the limelight as eco-friendly vehicles. In addition, hydrogen-electrical cars can purify the air. They suck the air, purify it, use it for hydrogen fuel cells, and then exhale clean air back into the exhaust vent. This has given the hydrogen-electric car the nickname of the Moving Air Purifier. Taking advantage of these benefits, the hydrogen-electrical cars are used as large sized busses, and public institution vehicles. The benefits of eco-friendly carsThe government is also planning to actively distribute such eco-friendly cars. The Korean government distributed 136,000 eco-friendly cars in 2021, and has set a goal for distributing 7,850,000 eco-friendly cars by 2030. To achieve this goal, the government and local governments are also making efforts to provide subsidies and other benefits. If you have an electric car, you can get subsidies of up to 8 million won. However, this differs according to the price of vehicles and the local governments that provide the subsidies. In the case of hybrid cars, the consumption taxes included in the price of cars can be reduced by about 1 million won when purchasing cars. Besides this, there are various other benefits like motorway tolls, 50 percent off, public parking fees, 50 percent off, etc. You can get more specific information about the model, and benefits through the QR code on the right side.To solve the problem of environmental pollution, engineers and scientists are working on new technologies. To help the planet, why dont we buy eco-friendly vehicles with no emissions? This will make the environment more healthy in the future.

  • Wise Mask EtiquetteBy Park Hyeon-su Chief Editor, Senior of English Language and LiteratureAs COVID-19 is spreading throughout the world, wearing a mask is becoming a more natural etiquette. The mask has become an indispensable necessity in our daily lives to protect our health. However, masks have a one-time use, so the amount of mask waste is also enormous. These discarded masks are so light that they fly off easily during the garbage disposal process. Unfortunately, abandoned masks have been found trapped around parts of the bodies of helpless wildlife, causing many animals, such as young seagulls, to suffer. It is very important to wear masks to fight this disease. But, how can we dispose of our masks wisely?1. All types of masks, regardless of material are discarded as general waste.According to the Environment Ministrys recycling separation and discharge guide, masks are registered as general waste. All kinds of masks, regardless of material, such as vinyl-coated paper, nonwoven fabric and cotton, are treated as general waste. Therefore, they must be placed in a pay-as-you-go bag to be incinerated. Because used masks are contaminated, you must wash your hands and disinfect for hygiene after discarding the mask.2. Fold the contaminated surface out of reach, tie it with a xss-string, and discard it.Because the surface of the mask is exposed to the outside, it is contaminated with various viruses and dust. Therefore, be careful not to touch the surface when removing the mask. To discard the mask, first, grab the edge and fold it twice so that the outer surface goes inside. Second, roll it so that it doesnt spread out and tie it with a xss-string. Third, spray sterilizers or seal them in plastic bags, etc. Afterwards, you can put it deep in a standard plastic bag to prevent it from leaking out during collection. Also, you must disinfect your hands after you throw away the mask. This is because hands may have been contaminated during the process of taking off the mask and folding it.3. Disinfect, seal and collect them in a waste bag at the public health center. If used by a person with a confirmed diagnosis or one who is in self-quarantine, their masks, gloves, and disinfectants are all classified and treated as medical waste. Therefore, this waste should be sterilized and placed in a dedicated envelope-type kit provided by a competent health center and kept completely sealed. The envelope is later collected or disposed of separately by visiting an isolation site at the health center.4. Crop Mask xss-string CampaignThe Korea Environment Corporation said that it is a good idea to tie up the mask strap instead of rolling it around. However, the material of the mask is light and the strap is loosened easily. The loose mask has a large area for its weight, so it flies well. Recently, the issue of wildlife suffering from masks has spread around the world. This is because a mask was seen tied to an animals leg after flying over a garbage dump.As a result, many animal rights groups and celebrities have launched campaigns and challenges to cut mask straps on social networking sites. The British Royal Society of Animals (RSPA) pointed out on Twitter that abandoned mask ear straps are causing animals to suffer because they cannot untie human waste trapped on their bodies. Kwon Joon-soo, a professor at Seoul National University Hospital, recently said on his personal SNS that, there are cases in which animals are tied up after trying to find food in garbage cans. I thought I should cut off the strap of my mask and throw it away. Lets cut the xss-string with scissors and throw it away. As this fact became known, the mask strap-cutting campaign quickly spread. The act of throwing away contaminated masks on the streets for fear of taking them home can cause environmental pollution as well as the spread of COVID-19. Therefore, lets make sure to practice wise mask habits for a healthy daily life.

Who Is Responsible for Climate Change?
  • 작성자HANBAT HERALD

  • Who Is Responsible for Climate Change?By Lee Woo-Seong Reporter Senior of Mechanical engineeringSince the Industrial Revolution, humans have released over 1.5 trillion tons of carbon dioxide (CO₂) into the atmosphere and the emissions keep rising. However, emissions need to get down to zero. In recent years, the consequences of this level of pollution have become more serious and visible. Every year, horrible records are broken. We've had more heat waves, more glaciers melting, and the lowest amount of ice ever recorded at the North Pole. The only way to limit this rapid climate change is to decrease our collective emissions quickly. Although all countries agree on this goal, they have not agreed to be responsible or to bear the heaviest loads. The developed countries point at their own efforts to reduce emissions and the fact that large developing countries are on the rise. For example, China is currently releasing much more CO₂ than in years past. On the other hand, developing countries argue that emissions by the West are lifestyle emissions, while for developing countries, they are survival emissions. Others call rich countries hypocrites that got rich by polluting the earth without any restraint and now expect others not to industrialize and therefore stay poor. So, who is responsible for climate change and CO₂ emissions?Which countries emit the most carbon dioxide today? In 2017, humans emitted about 36 billion tons of CO₂. More than 50% came from Asia. North America and Europe followed with 18% and 17%. While Africa, South America, and Oceania together only contributed eight percent. China is by far the world's largest emitter with 10 billion tons of CO₂ every year, or 27% of global emissions. It is followed by the USA with 15% and the European Union with around 10%. Together, this is more than half of the world's CO₂ emissions. So it is clear that without the willingness and action of these three industrial blocs, humanity will not be able to become carbon neutral and prevent severe climate change. Next on the list is India at seven percent, Russia at five percent, Japan at three percent, and Iran, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, and Canada all just short of two percent. The top 10 countries are responsible for 75% of global emissions. But, if we only look at the current situation, we are not getting the full picture.Which countries have emitted the most in total? If we look at emissions throughout history until today, the outlook changes drastically. The US and the EU both knock China off the top spot. The US is responsible for 25% of the world's historical emissions having emitted 400 billion tons, mostly in the 20th century. In second place is the EU at 22 percent. China comes in third at just under 13 percent, around half of the USA's contribution. India's contribution shrinks to 3 percent along with the whole of Africa and South America. The UK is responsible for one percent of annual global emissions but takes five percent of the historical responsibility. Germany, producing two percent of emissions per year today, has contributed almost six percent, as much as the whole of Africa and South America combined. So the narrative that rapid climate change is really the responsibility of the developing world is hard to defend if facts matter to you.So who should take the responsibility? Many of today's richest countries are in a convenient position. They have become rich over centuries of fossil fuel burning and industrial production. They have a large historical footprint, and their wealth means they still emit a lot per person. But, their countries annual emissions are now dwarfed by other countries, because the giant that is China is finally catching up, and other giants like India are on their way. Many Germans, for example, wonder how if Germany only accounts for two percent of yearly emissions, it can have a meaningful impact on reducing emissions. The answer is simple. For one, the richest countries have the resources, highly educated workforces, and technology to develop low-cost, low-carbon solutions and spread them around the world. If we don't want poorer countries to become as fossil fuel-dependent as we are, we need low-carbon technology to be cheap and available. If the rich countries of the West finally decide to try to make a major effort to slow rapid climate change, the rest of the world would follow, because it would have no choice. China is the largest CO₂ emitter today, and it's China's responsibility to grow in a way that will make it possible to transition to a zero-carbon world, in time. Others acting irresponsibly yesterday is a horrible excuse for repeating the same mistakes today. Climate change is a global problem, and no country can fix it alone. Working out who's responsible is not as simple as it seems, and in a way, it's a daft question, but one that has plagued international politics for decades. In the end, it's pretty simple. Each person can follow these easy steps to reduce their carbon footprint--recycle, take public transport.

  • An Era in whichEco-Friendliness is EssentialBy Joung In-young Cub Reporter, Freshman of Electronics ControlHave you ever seen a post uploaded on SNS with #In-Courage? This post made people aware of the wide use of unnecessary plastic in everyday life. As such, we can confirm that the movement related to Zero-Waste for environmental protection has recently become more active.Zero-Waste is a term that means the principle of designing all resources and products used in everyday life to be recycled so that no waste is buried or dumped in the sea. By 2010, major media and distribution companies from around the world, as well as influential individuals, began to join the movement. In addition, some states in the U.S, including California, are embracing Zero-Waste policies, which are evolving into a social movement. As people's interest grows around the world, consumers are also trying to build their own Zero-Waste lifestyles. Follow these steps to start your own Zero-Waste life.1. How to Practice Zero-Waste 5RAmerican Zero-Waste influencer Bea Johnson emphasized the practice of 5R for a Zero-Waste lifestyle through his blog and book.2. Companies taking the lead in recycling and reuseThe practice of zero-waste is really not that difficult. Using products from companies that practice Zero-Waste in line with the changing trends of society is another way. For example, here are some companies that have made plans to reduce waste.2-1) SpriteColored plastics are made of composite materials, so they have the disadvantage of being difficult to recycle. In response, Sprite, a global beverage company, has boldly given up on green, a symbolic color that has been maintained since its launch, and is selling its drinks in a transparent package that can be recycled.2-2) PatagoniaPatagonia, a popular U.S. clothing brand, produced outdoor clothing using recycled polyester extracted from plastic bottles, old fabrics, and used clothes.2-3) GoogleGoogle has reused expired data servers through its own campaign called Moonshot, and six of its 14 data centers have been built so that there is no trash going back to landfills.3. Zero-Waste Shop for EarthIts not just corporations, small businesses are also beginning to practice Zero-Waste. The number of the Zero-Waste shops is increasing greatly both at home and abroad. These stores are developing different strategies to avoid creating disposable waste. Korea is home to an inspiring new Zero-Waste shop.3-1) Seongdong-gu, Seoul, The PickerThe Picker was the countrys first Zero-Waste shop to open in 2016. Everything here is sold without packaging. This can reduce the amount of plastic used as packaging and also xss-create eco-friendly habits such as preparing containers or bags for vegetables or grains.3-2) Seodaemun-gu, Seoul Bottle FactoryThe Cafe Bottle Factory in Yeonhui-dong does not offer disposable cups. Instead, they lend tumblers to guests who visit without a personal cup. Also, unless the customer requests it, the receipt is not printed. They try to reduce unnecessary waste discharge to match other Zero-Waste shops. They also hold Your Bottle Week, an annual disposable cafe festival, to spread the Zero-Waste coffee culture through cafes near Seoul.Zero-Waste may seem cumbersome, but we must study and practice this lifestyle and take these small extra steps that can make a big difference. Then, for the sick Earth, we can coexist in a cleaner environment.

  • HMR, Hot Trend In The Food WorldBy Lee Seo-jin Cub Reporter, Sophomore of Material Science and EngineeringHave you ever heard of Home Meal Replacements? Recently, they have become a major trend in the food industry. They are so hot that new terms have been made to describe them and they are also called a future food. What is the reason for HMRs popularity?HMRs are packaged products of pre-processed ingredients that can be eaten after simple cooking. In general, when we eat food, we follow the traditional steps of purchasing ingredients, prepping them, cooking, eating, and cleaning up. HMR was xss-created with the aim of reducing these processes and efforts, and giving consumers greater freshness compared to conventional frozen foods. There are four types of HMRs: Ready-to-eat, Ready-to-heat, Ready-to-cook, and Ready-to-prepare.RTE(Ready-to-Eat)RTH(Ready-to-Heat)RTC(Ready-to-Cook)RTP(Ready-to-Prepare)Foods can be eaten without heating or cooking, such as lunch boxes, kimbap burgers, and sandwiches.Food can be eaten after a simple cooking process, such as soup, tang, and jjigae.Foods, such as frozen dumplings and frozen fried rice, that have undergone simple processing.Food ingredients, such as recipe meal kits, which are prepped and portioned for simple cooking by the consumer. The first HMR in Korea was curry. The 3-minute Curry, launched in 1981, is a first-generation HMR that focuses on convenience. The second generation of HMR focused on freshness. Refrigerated and frozen foods became popular. Since 2013, a 3rd generation of HMR has been made to include cup-bab, soup/tang/jjigae, and Korean side dishes. From 2015 to the present, premium daily meals have emerged, and a 4th generation of HMR has been xss-created in collaboration with famous restaurants and chefs. HMR has once again grown into a fifth generation. The keyword in the 5th generation of HMR is meal kits. Meal kits, with ready-to-prepare food, are becoming more popular as the coronavirus era continues. Because pre-portioned meal kits can be picked up at markets or delivered to your home, they are more convenient. And, theyre more fun to prepare for yourself. There are several reasons for the rapid growth of the HMR market. First, according to a recent survey by the National Statistical Office, the number of single-person households has increased significantly. Single people tend to buy processed foods, rather than making food at home. Due to this demographic shift, the development, production, and sales of HMR have also increased to meet this need.Secondly, online delivery has developed. Online malls are suitable for selling processed HMRs. If food companies sell products directly through their own online shop, they can reduce commissions paid to retailers and easily identify customers purchasing trends. This information can be used for marketing and developing new products. From a consumer's point of view, they get the advantage of receiving products comfortably delivered to their door at a cheaper price than offline.Third, there is the popularization of convenience stores. Convenience stores are easy to visit at any time, and we can easily buy a small amount of goods. Therefore, convenience stores close to houses are the best place for single-person HMR sales. Also, convenience stores are highly accessible, so it is easy for companies to advertise their products to consumers. What are the disadvantages of HMRs? First, there is the environmental concern about the use of disposable plastics that many HMRs are packaged in. Additionally, we have to check the expiration dates carefully. In particular, fresh RTCs have a short shelf life, so be careful. In addition, HMRs are often heated in a microwave, so we have to check the precautions before using a microwave.Precautions for Microwave UseStep 1Step 2Step 3Check if glass, paper, porcelain, or polypropylene is microwave safe when used.Follow the heating time listed on the package or recipe.Use gloves to remove food from the microwave. With the investment of many companies, the science and technology used in HMR is getting better and better. These days, with the new COVID-19 restrictions, getting food delivered is a safer way to have healthy meals. As new HMRs are developed, people have the chance to prepare a variety of new recipes for their families, or for themselves if they live alone.

  • BrexitBy Park Hyeon-su Chief Editor, Senior of English Language and LiteratureThe European Union (EU) is a European political and economic community. It was established after the leaders of the 12 countries in the European Community (EC) agreed in December 1991 to form a European Union (Treaty on European Union). The purpose of the EU is promoting economic and monetary integration and political integration. The treaty went into effect in November 1993 in Maastricht, Netherlands, after a ratification process by each country. The EU forms a national body with legislative, administrative, and judicial ministries. In other words, the European Parliament serves as the legislature, the executive committee as the administration, and the judicial tribunal as the judiciary. From such a well-organized EU, Britain carried out Brexit on Jan. 31, 2020. So what is Brexit?Brexit: A newly combined word from Britain and exit.In other words, it refers to the United Kingdom's exit from the EU. Politically and economically, the UK, one of the strongest countries in the EU, is expected to have a significant impact on the EU by withdrawing. The British Empire, once a superpower that ruled the world until the early 20th century, is still the world's seventh-largest economy as of 2020. Moreover, Brexit has developed into a global issue, as the UK is a powerful country that culturally affects the world, as well as it being a permanent member of the U.N. Security Council.Brexit has many pros and cons in and out of the UK. Now, let's hear the opinions of those who wanted to stay in the UK and those who wanted to leave.Remain supportJ. K. Rowling, author of the Harry Potter series, was a representative EU remainer. Before the vote, she lashed out at those who pushed for Brexit, calling them monsters and villains. Shortly after the results of the referendum were finalized, she responded on Twitter with an extreme response of Goodbye, UK, and to her followers' request to "do something," saying, "I've never thought more earnestly that I need magic."Withdrawal supportMichael Caine, currently living in the USA, was one of the few supporters of withdrawal from the British entertainment industry. Asked by The Guardian why he supported this withdrawal, he said, It wasnt about the racism, immigrants or anything, it was about freedom, revealing that his choice was for a Britain free from the oppression of the EU and that he had no regrets about it. However, as the British economy has deteriorated due to Brexit and the U.S.-China trade war, Caine confessed his feelings, saying, I'd rather be a poor master than a rich servant. So, what is the impact of Brexit on Korea?Although the UK voted to leave the EU in January 2020, there has been little immediate impact and they will maintain their previous relationship until December 31, 2020.Last year, South Korea and the UK reached a bilateral free trade agreement in principle for fear of a "no deal Brexit," which is likely to cause much confusion. For Britain, South Korea is one of the key allies in the Asia-Pacific region, along with Japan, Singapore, Australia, and New Zealand. At present, Korea is one of few countries with a population of more than 50 million that maintains a high standard of living and economic strength. Right now, only Britain, France, Germany and Italy, which are G7 countries, have larger economies than Korea. KEPCO is said to be interested in Britain's Moorside nuclear power plant construction project, while the UK is also eyeing South Korea's nuclear power plant construction technology and possible future joint projects in South Korea and the UK.As of January 2021, the UK will have a new relationship with the EU and will have to forge new global trade agreements. It will be interesting to see how the UK moves forward in the coming year, however, it will be a long time before we can determine whether Brexit was for the best or not.

The number of vegetarians in Korea, estimated by the Korea Vegetarian Union, reached about 1.5 million as of last year. Compared to 10 years ago, the figure has doubled. Here are the seven types of vegetarian diets.Raw Food Vegan: this is a person who excludes all food and products of animal origin, as well as food cooked at a temperature above 40.5 C. This diet includes raw fruits and vegetables, seeds, nuts, grains, legume sprouts, plant oils, sea vegetables, herbs, and mushrooms.Vegan: a person who does not eat or use animal products. However, nowadays the reasons that people have chosen to become vegetarian have changed. In countries like New Zealand where meat is not as expensive, people often choose to be vegetarians for reasons other than cost. Parental preferences, religious or other beliefs, and health issues are now among the most common reasons for choosing to be a vegetarian. Many people choose a vegetarian diet out of concern for animal rights or the environment. And, lots of people have more than one reason for choosing vegetarianism.Advantages of VegetarianismThere are also many benefits to our body through a vegetarian diet. Since meat consumption has increased in modern times, vegetarian food is also recommended to many people for the prevention of adult diseases, by controlling excessive protein and fat consumption. Excessive meat consumption increases blood sugar and increases weight. Fat in meat blocks blood vessels, raising the risk of heart attack. Compared with meat eaters, vegetarians tend to consume more vitamins C, E, and magnesium. As a result, they're likely to have lower total cholesterol, lower blood pressure, and lower Body Mass Index (BMI), all of which are associated with longevity and a reduced risk for many chronic diseases. Also, eating a vegetarian diet can help you increase the intake of fiber, achieve weight loss, and prevent the risk of cardiovascular disease. It can also reduce cancers caused by meat and processed foods and provide a natural antioxidant effect from fruit and vegetables. There's some evidence that vegetarians have a lower risk for cardiac events, such as a heart attack or death from heart disease. In one of the largest studies, vegetarians were, on average, 25% less likely to die of heart disease. Is the vegetarian diet the best for the body? There is something good about eating a plant based meal. However, the body must have all five nutrients evenly to keep healthy. That's why a vegetarian diet that you start for your health may sometimes be harmful to your health. The reason is that there may be nutrients that are not included in your vegetarian diet. Vegetarians have to be careful to include the following key nutrients: protein, calcium, iron, vitamin D, vitamin B12. If you dont eat red meat, you lack protein that lowers immunity and reduces body energy. Hair is also made up of protein, so there is a possibility of hair loss. The other problem is lack of iron. Consuming low iron can make your skin pale and cause severe headaches. If you're choosing a vegetarian diet, the most important thing you can do is educate yourself. If meat, fish, dairy products, and eggs are not going to be part of your diet, you'll need to know how to get enough of these nutrients, or you may need to take a daily multiple vitamin and mineral supplements. So, if you're considering going vegetarian, keep these tips in mind. There are numerous research-proven health benefits to following a vegetarian diet, but only if you’re doing it properly and not substituting meat with processed or high-fat vegetarian products. Both lacto-ovo vegetarians and vegans need to make sure they are getting adequate nutrition. It’s a good idea to purchase a book on how to follow a vegetarian diet, or to meet with a nutritionist to outline what a few days of meals looks like.Be aware of how much of your diet is made up of nuts as a source of protein, especially if you’re trying to lose weight. An ounce of nuts is about 180 calories and 5 grams of protein. You should be getting between 20 to 30 grams of protein per meal. You’d have to eat thousands of calories worth of something like nuts in order to get the amount of protein you need to be healthy. Nuts are a healthy food, but they are also high in fat and calories, so be sure to round out your diet with a variety of vegetarian proteins.Modern society has become rich in food. You can get meat at a cheap price and enjoy BBQ parties on weekends with your family and neighbors. But, rich food isn't the only good thing. Excessive consumption of meat can also harm our bodies. Reckless eating habits eventually make us sick. Whether you are an omnivore or choose a vegetarian way of life, the most important thing is to keep appropriately planned meals. We have to be smart about the consumption of every ingredient. Regardless, it is most important to think about what you eat and what kind of ingredients and foods are healthy for you. Well-balanced meals make our bodies healthy and healthy thoughts and ideas come from healthy bodies.
