How to Earn Units Efficiently

By Hong Yun-seo, Reporter, Sophomore of  Building and Systems Engineering

HBNU operates the “C+U200 Graduation System”. Most enrolled students have likely heard of it. In the era of the 4th Industrial Revolution, this system was introduced to cultivate talented people with 5C core competencies and improve the quality of university education through extracurricular activities, away from the evaluation centered on major subjects. Under this system, students must complete 130 credits for a regular curriculum and 70 units through extracurricular activities to graduate. To meet this graduation requirement, students must apply for various extracurricular and activities in addition to the credits they earn in a regular curriculum to earn a total of 70 units. Activities through which students can earn units can be found on the “H-CAN Hanbat Core Ability Management System website,” which manages everything about the unit, but it may be difficult to earn units efficiently only with the programs shown on the homepage. Therefore, I would like to introduce some activities that are easy and simple compared to programs or certificates, and that students do not know well or have low utilization rates.

Unit CHECK Day : Extracurricular Activity Self-Inspection

The first way to be introduced is “unit CHECK day extracurricular activity self-inspection.” In short, this program is based on a checklist format. Through question items that check the number of units acquired, future acquisition plans, and recognition units for each participation activity, the units acquired so far can be inspected and the plan can be established accordingly. Self-inspection is generally conducted for about 3 weeks from the second Monday of every month except January. In January, a comparison of C+U200 and a survey of satisfaction and demand for program operation were conducted, and the same number of units was assigned to the activity. Participating in this activity gives 1 unit. It may seem like a small amount, but if you participate once every month for a year, you can earn a total of 12 units. If you steadily participate until the fourth grade, you can acquire up to 48 units, which is by no means insignificant in the long run.

Clinic

The second method is the “Clinic” program. HBNU is running the “Basic Liberal Arts Clinic Helproom.” This program provides one-on-one learning counseling to students, focusing on basic liberal arts subjects such as physics, math, and English communication. In brief, this program allows faculty members to answer and explain questions about each of the subjects described above, and literally receive personalized academic support. The helproom is operated during the semester, and although there are slight differences in details for each semester, the normal helproom is usually open from 12:00 to 17:00 or 19:00. Students can choose the method of participation through face-to-face, ZOOM, or KakaoTalk counseling. If you participate face-to-face, you can visit the Yeji Hall next to the library or the helproom located in S4 building. When you participate in Kakao Talk, you can participate by searching Hanbat University (Nomad Learning Center) on Kakao Talk, selecting the inquiry button, and selecting the desired subject and counseling method through chat. This activity is given 1 unit for each of 3 participations, and the grade limit for each area is 5 units. You can freely receive counseling even for simple questions, and you can also acquire units through explanation from the faculty. If you have difficulty with your studies, a visit to the help room will be helpful.

Various surveys, participation in school competitions

The third way to introduce it is “Participation in Surveys and Campus Competitions.” HBNU often awards units as compensation for participation when conducting surveys to encourage unit acquisition. Therefore, it is advisable to pay attention to various simple surveys promoted in the department’s communication channel or on the HBNU website. In general, 1 unit is paid when participating in the survey, and up to 10 units can be obtained for each grade. Combined with the activities introduced above, it helps to meet the graduation requirements. In addition, units can be gathered as rewards for participating in various competitions. An example is the “16th Debate Contest,” which was held on October 2025. This competition was given two units as compensation for participation in the preliminary round. Although the payment conditions and compensation units differ for each competition, it is helpful to actively look for such opportunities because you can gain various experiences and even collect units.

So far, we have looked at some ways to efficiently gather units. Students are encouraged to refer to these methods and manage their units in a way that works best for them.
